The Full Moon in Plant Spirit Work
The full moon is a powerful time for our work with the mighty green plant spirits. While we tend to think of herbal work in terms of the Sun’s dance- the 4 seasons and the agricultural flow of the year, the exerts an equally important force over the wild ways of green sorcery. In this article I’d like to explore some of the ways we can attune to the tides of the moon to deepen our herb magic, plant spirit work, healing, and connections.
The Moon & Plant Spirits
The moon has four essential phases: dark, waxing, full, and waning. Each of these phases is in harmony with the subtle movement of our plant allies- whether vibrant summer or dead of winter. The influence of the moon and the ways he teaches us to align to the tides of nature are by no means limited to the growing seasons; they reflect the spiritual mysteries of the plants and are always taking place, green or brown.
THE DARK MOON
This is the group of nights where there is no visible moon in the sky. At this time, the plants are in their spiritual inhalation and have sunk down into the depths of the land, back into their roots, back to their own mysterious green realm.
THE WAXING PHASE
As the moon returns and grows in light and power each night, the plant spirits slowly rise back into our world as their sap gently rises up stalks and stems. Returning from their rooted rest, they emerge refreshed and vibrant to aid us in our magic and medicine.
THE FULL MOON
AT the full of the moon the plant spirits are fully invested in our world- fully exhaled into our reality. They have risen up toward the sky and have adjusted their leaves to soak up the soft, cool glow of the midnight moon. At this time, the plant spirits are present in our work in special ways which we will explore further on.
THE WANING PHASE
As the full moon passes, the plant spirits once again slowly descend back into their roots, back into the dark depths of their own mysteries. We see the posture of plants change slightly and those with sensitive vision can see them enter into a short two-week cycle of rest and rejuvenation… only to start the whole cycle again!
Full Moon Plant Rituals
As mentioned above, the full of the moon offers those of us engaged with plant spirit work a powerful opportunity to go deeper into our green sorcery. On these nights, we can attune to the quieter power of the plants and bath in their reflecting of the moon's silvery light.
I like to take the full moon night as a monthly sacred rite- a time when I experience the presence of my plant spirit allies more powerfully in my own life. Those who guide me, protect me, and heal me day after day can be given a monthly 'feast' ritual by which they are duly honored and celebrated.
This ritual can be as simple as sitting in sacred space, calling out to your allies of plant, ancestor, and deity, and simply giving them thanks in your own way. You might also consider sending offerings of breath to your plant allies- especially if you are able to sit with them as they grow in the ground. Offerings, libations, incense, and other gifts can be made to the deities and ancestors who inform your ways and play parts in your own green spirituality. You can also dedicate the night of the full moon to extra meditation, journeywork in the green realm with the guiding light of the moon, study, or evening walks in nature.
No matter how you honor the sacred tides of moon and sun, I hope they bring you peace and plenty!
