Shouldn't all medicine be spiritual medicine? I think so.
Spiritual Herbalism is an invitation and a modality. It works two ways towards a unified goal...
First, Spiritual Herbalism sees the plants as spirits. We embrace a radically animistic perspective and actively honor the personhood of our plant allies. They are not things, tools, or chemicals. They are people; spiritual people.
Second, we recognize and follow the spiritual underpinning of all expressions of health and dis-ease. We see ourselves as spiritual beings, and our bodies as sacred temples. When something is wrong, we address the issue in a truly holistic way- bringing in plant medicine to touch on all levels of being simultaneously and with harmony. When things are good, we celebrate, protect, and nourish that goodness.
Spiritual herbalism is the oldest form of plant medicine on the planet, one cultivated by people from all places. Through showing up completely in our work we learn the fullness of the herbs. We turn away from the allopathic models of plant medicine where an herb is 'good for this issue' or 'can be used for this disease', and instead explore the depth of power and expression in the plants. We ask the plants to teach us how they want to be worked with in our work, and we honor that. This is about relationship between herbalists and plants, plants and people, and herbalists and their communities.
Spiritual herbalism is also radical and resistant at its core. Because we work from the place of spirit, we create spaces where the work cannot be controlled, colonized, or poisoned by the types of agendas we see in modern medicine, government, and education systems. The plants will not be controlled- and neither will the people who work with them.
The goal in all of this? Harmony.
Deep, powerful, abiding harmony in all beings, between all beings, and within the whole universe.
Space for each of us to be who we are, like space for each flower to be its own color, texture, and aroma.
Magical connections between all beings that nourish, protect, and celebrate the uniqueness, the sameness, and the beauty we each carry.
