The Plant Spirit Path is an animist, visionary tradition that helps us connect more deeply to our plant allies; working with them to cultivate more harmony in self and in cosmos. Here, we slow down to tree speed and find ourselves entranced by the rustling of leaves, all to step into the world of the verdant ones and bring back their wisdom, magic, and medicine.

Plants are conscious, wise, and communicative beings- our kin in this wild world of beautiful mysteries. The Plant Spirit Path offers us a way to step into direct connection with them in the ways we have done since time immemorial.
Through our work with the plants we align to their medicine, magic, and wisdom through practices of animist ritual, meditation, journeywork, and embodiment. Eventually, we learn how to learn directly from our green kin and become their students; being guided and inspired as we walk this ancient and sacred way.
The Green Arte is a modern tradition of The Plant Spirit Path as taught by herbalist and educator Josh Williams. Through timeless and potent practices, we nourish our kinship with the verdant realms and become carriers of medicine, magic, and wisdom to the world.

I’ve been a student of the plants and their mysteries for over 25 years- exploring the ways we’ve worked with the plants to create healing, harmony, and spiritual growth throughout the ages. After all this time, I still continue to be surprised all the time at who the plants are and how they show up for us.
As a full-time clinical herbalist, I am fortunate to get to work with clients from across the world and connect them to the profound medicine and magic of the plants. Over the years, I have taken my research and study around the old wortcunning ways of my ancestors and applied it to the modern world we all live in here and now. In doing so, I’ve found that their problems reflect our own problems- even though distanced by thousands of years. The ancient medicine ways still speak perfectly to our human condition- and I am so excited to be sharing traditional herbalism with you here, now.
In 2016 I started on The Plant Spirit Path; being given the name The Green Arte from my plant teachers as a living tradition of spiritual herbalism for the modern world. This is what I practice in the clinic and teach here- and everyone who approaches with respect and love is welcome to learn with me.

Wortcunning is a sacred term which comes from the Anglo-Saxon traditions of animist-pagan Britain. The word means ‘one who knows the plants’- and it speaks to knowing the plants by their physical forms (botany), their medicine (læcecræft), and their mysteries.

Spiritual herbalism is a whole-person approach to health and wellness that approaches each of us as unique beings living in a world full of other beings, relationships, and possibilities.
Spiritual herbalism also approaches and works with the herbs as spiritual beings. They are not things, resources, commodities, or unconscious matter here to serve the human narrative- rather they are fully conscious, wise, and sovereign beings in their n right whom we work with through acts of kinship and reciprocity.

So, we can work with herbs to help create harmony and positive transformation in our lives which is quite magical.

The Ways of Wortcunning
Wortcunning is an ancient term which derives from the sacred plant practices of the Anglo-Saxon folk. As a term, it is made up of two distinct words: wyrta and cunnan. Wyrta is any plant, but specifically the plants we know and work with in medicine and magic. Cunnan is knowledge and wisdom about something- often occult in nature. So, Wortcunning is the path of knowing the mysteries of the plants and working with them in service of self, community, and cosmos.
It can be easy to think that the old ways of spiritual herbalism don’t have a role to play in the world we live now- but the wisdom of our herbwise ancestors continues to show us that the plants are as relevant and important now as they ever were- and the medicine they bring us can speak to the most complex of our personal and collective disharmonies.
By engaging with Wortcunning, we connect to the plants the way our collective ancestors have always done; as arcane spirits full of consciousness, wisdom, and power. We draw these blessings into how we craft medicine, do ritual, create magic, assess disharmonies, and serve people. Wortcunning is an invitation to go further into the deep green mysteries and to engage person-to-person with the plants as teachers, allies, and spirits of nature.
Luckily, we have many texts, charms, recipes, approaches, and traditions that have survived mostly from the 10th century. Over the years, I have woven these bits ad pieces together into a living tradition of modern Wortcunning that can be practices by anyone, anywhere, who holds a deep respect for the ancestral wisdom contained in the teachings.
