The Wyrtcræft Program is the only one of its kind in the world- an immersive exploration of traditional magical & medicinal herbalism rooted in our ancient animist-pagan-heathen ways.
This three-level certificate course guides you into the green mysteries of the plants supported by the vibrant traditions of our collective herbwise ancestors. We’ll dig into the existing herbals from the Old World and apply them for the good of self, community, and world.
This program is unique in that it blends structured learning through live, online classes with one-on-one traditional mentorship to help you learn, experience, and embody the wisdom of spiritual herbalism.
Each of the three levels will take you deeper into the green artes and provide you with exceptional education, skills, and experiences initiating you into our tradition of modern Wortcunning.

Level One | Foundations
A comprehensive introduction to Old English Wortcunning including history, pagan and animist perspectives, the nature of illness, an introduction to Old English Herbals, 9 herbal monographs, wortcunning practices, ancestral blessings, and modern applications.
This level is a fertile soil into which the deeper wisdom-seeds of the next two levels can be planted and sprouted.

Level Two | Plants & Practices
A life-changing exploration of the parts of self, the nature of the universe, the ways of hælu and unhælu, deities of the Wortcunning, charms, remedies, assessments, advanced herbal monographs, plant spirit work, and divination.
Level two bring brings both magic and medicine to life as we look at eays to call forth the wisdom of the herbwise ancestors into our lives here and now.

Level Three | Herbwise
Our goal with all Wortcunning practice is to become wyrta-wihta, herbwise. In this advanced level students will receive one-on-one mentorship, curated learning projects, advanced and mystery teachings from the Wortcunning traditions, and practical experience in working with self and others.
Level Three is intended for those who wish to use traditional Wortcunning practices as a community offering.

Anyone who has a deep respect for the plants, their stories, and the traditions and cultures that preserve their wisdom can learn Wortcunning!
Modern Wortcunning and our tradition of these Green Artes are rooted in the Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, Norse, Scandinavian, and Indo-European streams of plant lore. They are open practices (when done with dedication and respect) and are welcoming to all people from all places.
Our school and courses are fiercely anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ affirming (and operated!), eager to create accessibility for disabled folks wherever possible, and invested in sharing animist inspiration to whoever will receive it.

Our Wortcunning program is truly one of a kind. It centers the ancestral wisdom handed down to use from our herbwise forebears while being truly relevant to the world we live in now. We focus on the plants, the charms, and the relationships we make with those plants and charms as a foundation for exceptional spiritual herbal practice.

If you’re new to attending live, online classes, we’ve got you!
Our classes happen on Zoom and are backed by excellent audio and visual quality along with informative and engaging images, notes, and slides.
We aim to make every class and course as engaging and entertaining as possible so that you can learn it all with joy. Online classes allow us to connect with people from across the world!

Certification happens after completing all three levels of the Wortcunning program.
In the USA, herbalism is not a professionally regulated practice so our certification does not cover that. Rather, you are a certified member of The Green Arte Tradition of Wortcunning, have earned the right to use that name and title in your practice, and can show everyone how hard you’ve worked through all three levels!

Why Study & Experience Wortcunning?
When we connect to the deep roots of spiritual herbalism, we find that there is a well of power that dramatically transforms not just how we do herbalism- but why we do it. Our collective herbwise ancestors were in a different kind of world- one filled with relationships, reciprocity, and ritual. Their perspective on what disease was, how it should be handled, and what one must do to protect themselves from recurrence was quite different from our own in the modern day, but there is a profound value in the way they approached this work that I think is perhaps more valuable now than ever before.
Wortcunning, as taught at The Green Arte, offers us a well-lit way to explore ancestral herbal traditions so that we can bring them into the here and now. By leaning into the green blessings of old, we can learn from what has always worked and apply that wisdom to the world we live in now.
